NATIVE SKETCHES

17 // Kami Awori

I (Kami) started with percussion from Maschine’s Congolezi kit, with sounds from other kits added in later. I automated the pitch to bring them to life, then added the first melodic element, the Dynamic Stage Clavier preset from Massive, and added some chorus to give it an 80s vibe. I added snares from the Progressive House kit (included in Maschine 1.8), and then Awori stepped in to record vocals, taking inspiration from the percussive elements of the track, and also Grace Jones records from the 80s. After that, I added the Bull Trava sub bass from Massive (included in the Caribbean Current Maschine Expansion) and the Bacterial pad from Reaktor Prism (included in the Circuit Halo Maschine Expansion)

Biography

Kami Awori is a Parisian duo of pianist-turned-producer Kami and singer-songwriter Awori. The two play a minimalistic, polyrhythmic concoction of electro-soul, infused with traditional percussion influences from Mali, Uganda, Haiti, and Cuba. In mid 2017, their gorgeous glassy take on WizKid’s hit Ojuelegba premiered on AFROPUNK, giving listeners a sneak peek of what to expect from their forthcoming debut album.
