Reaktor 5 or lower

DESCRIPTION

Version 3 includes unstablized oscillator to get even more "analog" sound however the ensemble dosn't use the Analog Legacy technology.

Yet another imitation of a 2 oscillator subtractive polyphonic synthesizer. It is similar to the Prophet 5 (major competitor at the time) and the younger Synthex.
The OB-X has two younger brothers, OB-Xa and OB8. They are not exactly the same but very similar.

This is very much a bread and butter analog poly synth, but I would like to put your attention on the Voice panning feature. Each voice can have it's own stereo panning. This is really a unique feature I'v never seen on any other synth so far (ok, the PPG gets close). Instant fat pads :-)

To hear the OB-X in action check out Tangerine Dream's album Exit, Japan's Tin Drum and Rush's Moving Pictures.

I used my OB-Xb ensemble as a starting point creating the OB-Y. When I built the OB-Xb I used the ensemble Super Prophet by C. Heusser as a starting point. In addition to the original design I’v put velocity control to the filter and amplitude
(velocity controllers from Uwe G. Hoenig’s Nanowave). The button image is taken from James Clarks excellent Mona/Polly ensemble (I modified them a bit). The keyboard image is taken
from an ensemble by Soundpilot. The time constant glide is using a macro by John Nowak. Also I added some build-in effects, which there are not in the original synth. Apart from that I’v tried to be as true to the design of the OB-X as I could.
Also in an effort to be as true as possible is the small amount of random controlling the oscillator pitch (also from Super Prophet). This gives the ensemble a slight "phat" sound
especially in combination with the chorus. I have never seen or used the real thing I have no idea how close the OB-Y sounds to the original. I used the manual's of OBX to get details in addition to Jeffrey's excellent home page for the OB-Xa (see below).
If you have any suggestions on how to make this imitation more close to the real thing, please tell me.

Mind you, I have no relationship to sonicproject.

Absolutely excellent sound and very low CPU. Thanks!

having a hard time getting it up and running in 2020. It loads in but it won't output anything, and I can't get it to change to omni.

Regaring the intro sound of Rush Tom Sawyer, I think it's layered with a Moog Taurus bass pedal, making it really really fat.

Fantastic sound, great to demonstrate that Reaktor can sonically emulate real synths: just make your friends listen to the Rush original an then play the Tom Sawyer snapshot! Wow!

Wowwww ! This one is a reallly fantastic sounding synth. Would be a "11" if possible. Outstanding and fat lead sounds, very convincing stereo chorus effects, just to name a few highlights. Makes me feel if someone gave me the price of Reaktor back. Exceptional work, thank you very much, stay inspired !

Great synth emulation. I never played the real thing either, but it sounds a hell of al ot like the Oberheim synths and filters that I remember. I have a new favorite synth brass source. THis thing is as good as many commercial releases of classic synth emulations. I recommend it without reservation.

Jo, that's intresting... but in some cases like a horizontal row of switches, skinning doesn't do the job.

Oops... sorry. I did just that - using switches and skinned them. That saves ca. 20% CPU (absolute).

Since R5 you can directly skin buttons (and switches), so you don't need to use multipictures. In fact - regarding automation in a host - it's to the best advantage.

Stephan, that hint text should be changed - I built OB-Y from OB-Xb and there you have it.. one of the few differences... Regarding cpu, one starting poiint would be shuting of the non used waveform from the osc as you can only use one at a time. It's only the switches that saves cpu by shuting off the non selected inputs. As I used relays asthey can be remote controlled by the multi pics, both are active all the time. You would save 50%...Also reducing the polyphony is the easy way out...

Jo, I'm aware of an issue using unison mode... I've tried to track it down but failed... I used ewistrand's key mode macro - I'm no event guru...

nice thing. but is there a way to modulate the pitch of osc 2 by the filter envelope? the hint says so... by the way it's much to heavy on cpu for me. but it's a great inspiration to build my own synth with a lower cpu consumption. thanks a lot!

That's a killer ensemble, man! Stunning looks, cool sounds... a plain eleven!! One thing - there seems to be an issue with unison-mode here: when playing a higher note, the (held) lower one doesn't get cut off, while it works as intended when I play a note that's lower than the held one. I'm on a Mac (G5 / 10.4.5). Thanks a whole lot for this labour of love!

I remembered middle 80's atmosphere. My fingers are still playing low E key using default patch of Tom Sawyer. Thanks!
